About the Department
The Department of Accounting & Information Systems (AIS) is one of the premier departments of the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka. Accounting has been taught at the University since the 1922–23 session, and the Department was formally established in 1970 as one of the two founding departments of the Faculty of Commerce, starting with 8 teachers and 140 students.
Its faculty are highly qualified and foreign trained, actively engaged in research and publication, and serve in university governance and on the boards of public enterprises. Together with its alumni association, Accounting Alumni, the Department awards more than 100 merit- and need-based scholarships.

To equip students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accounting and management needed to meet the demands of today's job market and succeed in a competitive business environment.
By developing highly qualified professionals who can ensure financial discipline at every level of the economy, the Department aims to strengthen a culture of accountability and transparency in Bangladesh, supporting good governance.

Milestones
- 1922–23 Accounting teaching begins in the Department of Commerce, with the two-year B.Com. (Pass) program
- 1948–49 Master of Commerce (M.Com.) studies begin; first degrees awarded in 1950
- 1953 Three-year B.Com. (Honours) program launched
- 1970 Faculty of Commerce founded; Department of Accounting established with 8 teachers and 140 students. Prof. Dr. M. Habibullah appointed first Chairman
- 1995 Faculty renamed Faculty of Business Studies; B.Com./M.Com. become BBA/MBA
- 2002 Department renamed Accounting & Information Systems
